AN ATLAS FOR CURIOUS OBSERVERSRA • DEC • HORIZON
THE EVENING PRACTICE / OBSERVER'S NOTES

A first observation from your own neighbourhood

Everything here can be practiced a little at a time, from wherever you can see the sky.

01 / 04

Choose a familiar viewpoint

A courtyard or an open spot near home can be sufficient. Prioritise safe access and an unobstructed portion of sky over travelling far away.

02 / 04

Look before naming

Notice how bright points differ from one another and where the brightest objects sit above the horizon. Try describing what you see without immediately consulting a chart.

03 / 04

Record a direction

Use a compass or a familiar landmark to fix one direction. Return to the same place later and notice how the arrangement appears to shift.

04 / 04

Bring a warm layer

Standing still outdoors becomes chilly surprisingly quickly. Comfort helps you concentrate on observation rather than the clock.
