PHASES IN THE SKY / OBSERVER'S NOTES

Following the lunar month from home

Everything here can be practiced a little at a time, from wherever you can see the sky.

01 / 04

Watch the illuminated edge

The bright portion changes gradually as our viewing angle to the Sun-lit half of the Moon changes. Its outline tells a story over successive nights.

02 / 04

Notice the position

The Moon appears at different times and places as its orbit progresses. The same clock hour will not always reveal it in the same part of the sky.

03 / 04

Try a sequence of sketches

Draw a simple circle each clear evening and shade the dark portion. Put the sketches in date order to reveal the rhythm.

04 / 04

Notice the rising time

The Moon does not rise at the same hour each day. Check local predictions before planning an evening observation.
